Customer challenge
GCA is an agricultural and specialty chemical manufacturing company aiming to become one of the largest ammonia producers when it builds its greenfield anhydrous ammonia production facility on the Texas Gulf Coast. The facility will produce approximately 1.3 million tons of ammonia per year from hydrogen and nitrogen gases to supply domestic and international agricultural fertilizer and specialty chemical markets. Nitrogen-based fertilizers are widely used to improve crop production and yields to feed the world’s growing population. In recognition of the breadth and scope of the large capital project, GCA acknowledged the tremendous value that a full-service owner’s representation firm could offer in guiding the project in achieving overall success. The GCA leadership team reached out to HGA to help deliver successful oversight of the project and help them overcome any challenges and successfully complete the project on time and within budget.
Our solution
Over the course of the project, the HGA team, reporting to the GCA management team, fully integrated all the project stakeholders, and together with a shared goal of executing a world-class project, provided enhanced outcomes in the following areas:
- Saved Time and Money: Monitored the budget and scope to align with predetermined project parameters.
- Enhanced Communication: Coordinated the efforts and accountability of construction managers, engineers, and vendors within each phase of the project.
- Improved Risk Mitigation and Peace of Mind: Aggregated and analyzed large datasets to ensure adherence to project KPIs.
- Informed Decision Making: Provided real-time VistaTrak performance dashboards enabling the GCA leadership team to make necessary decisions in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Looked Out for the Owner’s Best Interests: Identified key action plans, provided technical support, and established potential action items to resolve and tackle project issues on a proactive basis.
Value delivered
Working together with the owner, the HGA owner’s representative team, acting as its advocate and representing GCAs best interest, helped manage contractual issues and explain complex industry best practices. The HGA team assisted GCA in making informed decisions that kept the project on track. As a result of successful project management from the HGA owner’s representative team, the construction of the new anhydrous ammonia facility is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023 while meeting safety, quality, and cost objectives. The oversight from our team also achieved the highest safety standards, with a total recordable incidence rate of .23 and 3.1 million man-hours hours worked without a recordable safety incident. In partnering with HGA, GCA was able to manage and mitigate the inherent risks involved in the mega-project development process and ensured that the project’s goals were fully realized.
