Biogas / Biomass

The anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste emits methane, commonly referred to as “Biogas” or “Biomethane.”  Having low carbon intensity scores and very small amounts of water vapor and nitrogen, Biogas is an extremely clean alternative to traditional natural gas.  These inherent properties allow Biogas to be efficiently scrubbed of impurities producing high-quality Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) which can be used as a substitute for or blended with traditional natural gas. Having worked in the pipeline sector and chemical industry since our inception, HGA understands the process to collect, clean, and transport the RNG through pipelines or as highly marketable CNG and LNG.

New Facilities or Updating/Converting

Whether you plan to build a greenfield processing plant or looking to optimize your existing facility HGA can advise you from concept to start up. Our EPCM approach to biogas processing provides our clients with services from consultation and design to construction, commissioning, and start-up.  With over 20 years of experience in engineering and project management, our team has successfully executed projects from $100,000 to over $150,000,000. Having designed and built some of the earliest LFG and biogas processing plants in the U.S.; our team offers more than 90 years of combined experience in renewable fuels processing.

Digester Design & Selection

For new biogas facilities sizing and selecting the proper digester is a critical step in designing the overall process. Having experience with a variety of digester styles and several agricultural and municipal waste streams, HGA understands the significant variables to consider ensuring the proper digester is selected for maximum efficiency and reliability. We work closely with industry-leading digester manufacturers to select the proper digester for your application.

H2S and siloxane removal

HGA’s approach to H2S and siloxane removal utilizes a regeneratable liquid scavenger system that discharges elemental Sulfur and therefore produces no air emissions. With the use of a liquid scavenger, our process eliminates the need for periodic solid media replacement, potential downtime, and hazardous waste disposal that is required by dry H2S removal systems and thermal oxidizer permitting.  For siloxane removal, HGA incorporates a deep chilling technology that combines the necessary dehydration for biogas treatment with a novel approach for siloxane removal which discharges the removed siloxanes and VOCs as an aqueous discharge, eliminating the air emissions of other removal technologies.

Have you considered LNG?

The ability to further process biogas into Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) offers biogas producers that were previously unable to maximize the value of their asset a viable means to access the RNG market’s full potential. Not only is LNG a higher quality, but the higher-valued product (~ 98% pure methane) is also easily transportable by truck and rail providing new access to a multitude of potential customers and applications.  This approach is particularly applicable to projects where natural gas pipelines are either logistically inconvenient or in areas difficult to permit interconnections.

Traditional vs. Virtual Pipeline

HGA has successfully designed and constructing pipelines for over 20 years.  If your facility has a pipeline nearby and building a short (feeder) pipeline to tie into a larger one is the most feasible option for you, we can help determine the right layout, assist in getting right-away and permits, as well as design and construction.

For trusted expertise and biogas/biomass system development, you can rely on HGA.
