POST-COMBUSTION CARBON CAPTURING
Post-combustion carbon capture methods are primarily used
to clean existing emissions. The flue gases containing carbon dioxide are
redirected into a chemical absorber, where the carbon dioxide is absorbed and
clean gas exits the system. The absorbent regeneration process isolates the
carbon dioxide so it can be sent to storage while cleaning the spent absorbent
for recycle.
Features
- Post-combustion carbon capturing is best suited to existing processes, since
changes are not required for existing equipment.
- Absorbents include various types of amines.
- Carbon emissions can be reduced up to 85%.
- An evolving post-combustion carbon capture method involves a filter filled
with porous carbonaceous sorbent. This technique is still under development and
is yet to be analyzed at industrial scale.
Advantages
- High feasibility for retro-fitting current industrial processes, since
carbon capturing equipment is added downstream of the existing systems.
- Existing experience in pilot scale operations.
Disadvantages
- This method of carbon dioxide capture is yet to be proven in industrial
scale processes.
- High absorber operating cost.
How can HGA’s staff design your post-combustion carbon capture system?
- Do you have an existing plant that may require changes in the face of
impending environmental regulation? HGA can evaluate your existing system and
recommend the changes that you need.
- HGA can help you sort through the myriad of emerging technology.
- Do you have a need to compare different technologies but do not have the
resources? HGA can technically evaluate several process alternatives and prepare
a total installed cost for each alternative, so you can make an informed choice
concerning the future of your plant.
